The King's Speech

The Good: We were not expecting much with this movie to be quite honest; we just started watching it because it was on our "best picture nominee" list.  But like always Mr. Darcy has taken out breath away from us again! Heck, if he asked us to jump off a bridge we would do it.  In just a few words this is the ideal "coming of middle-age" movie about a king who overcomes his studder in order to effectively lead his country.  It was nice to have a movie about a monarchy that didn't potray complete power and perfection. as opposed to other movies like "Elizabeth" and "Alexander" the director didn't show the leaders as being perfect and pompas, but instead he showed a man who was scared of being a leader because he needed growth.  The shock for C in this movie was Helena Bonham Carter.  C IS NOT a fan in her previous movies, however in this movie she was so personable and such a real character, and C could not help but to admire her.  A was especially impressed with how well Mr. Darcy or "the king" has aged. He is one good looking fella, wish I could say the same about Geoffrey Rush.

The Bad: In a movie that is based on a historical event it is hard to criticize the plot. However, I wish that there would have been a few more glimpses of the King interacting with his family because those moments were so precious. A took a little issue with Helena Bonham Carter, not because of her acting, but he prefers her slightly-crazed outfits in the Tim Burton movies and so it was a weird adjustment. For C the casting was spot on. The only "bad" thing was the language. C is someone who is normally offended by the f-word, the language wasn't used in an offensive manner, but instead was used almost comically as a stammer-controller.

The Ugly: The ugly truth is that this movie is incredible! I know by now, you readers probably think that A and C are only full of praise, but The King's Speech was definitely an award-winning movie. Colin Firth did such a good job becoming the character that you didn't feel awkward during his studders and stammers, instead you could feel his pain and his embarrassment. However, due to the language, we do not recommend this as a History class movie or one for the whole family.

  4. I actually in some ways thought Geoffrey Rush was the best part of the movie. It was fun to see him give some comic relief while not wearing a pirate's outfit.
